Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom at UNSW

UNSW is committed to protection of academic freedom and freedom of speech (also described as intellectual freedom and freedom of inquiry) as essential to the proper conduct of teaching, research and scholarship within the University. This commitment is evident in the UNSW Act, the establishing document of the University, the UNSW Code of Conduct, the Student Code of Conduct and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, the proposed new Academic Enterprise Agreement, and an agreement, The Hefei Statement on the Ten Characteristics of Contemporary Research Universities, which UNSW has endorsed, as a member of the Group of Eight.


UNSW awarded five stars for employment outcomes

UNSW Sydney has been awarded the maximum five-star rating for ‘Getting a Job’ in the latest Good Universities Guide, the only Group of Eight university to do so this year.

The Guide found that more than 76% of UNSW undergraduates find full-time employment within four months of graduating – ahead of the national average of 69%.

UNSW was one of only two metropolitan-based universities (alongside Notre Dame) to achieve the five-star employment rating. Six regional universities also achieved the maximum score.


Reputation & Rankings

The latest QS World University Rankings have placed UNSW Sydney 43 in the world and fourth in Australia, up two places from last year’s ranking of 45.

At 43 in the world, UNSW is among the top 4% of universities in the rankings. UNSW has moved up nine places since 2013.

Reputation is a central piece of the ranking criteria, accounting for half of the total score. Based on the views of more than 139,000 employers and academics world-wide, UNSW ranked 28 globally in Employer reputation and 38 globally in Academic reputation.

The University also scored highly for its research quality and proportion of international students, jumping 12 spots in Citations per faculty (46 globally) and International students (48 globally).

It is the seventh year running UNSW has received a perfect score for the proportion of international faculty members.

UNSW President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Jacobs, said the ranking reflects UNSW’s strong reputation as Australia’s global university.
